Kharg Island Tensions Escalate in Ongoing Middle East Conflict
Iran's energy sector has been at the center of escalating tensions in recent weeks. In mid-April, the US imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports after Tehran effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway that carried one-fifth of the world's oil supply.
The Kharg Island oil hub, located 16 miles from Iran's coast and 300 miles northwest of the Strait of Hormuz, has been a major point of contention. According to Iranian officials, operations at Kharg have not stopped, with workers busy repairing previous damage and modernizing facilities.
US President Donald Trump had previously tweeted about a potential attack on Kharg Island, but a US official later clarified that the military had not targeted the island. The situation remains volatile, with both sides trading warnings over the past few months.
