Korea and Egypt Eye Summit Amid Middle East Tensions
South Korea and Egypt are seeking to hold a summit next month, focusing on energy supply chain cooperation amid growing tensions in the Middle East. The two governments are discussing a schedule for high-level talks, potentially involving a visit by an Egyptian official to South Korea.
The countries previously agreed to continue negotiations toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement at a November summit between their leaders. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi also requested that Korean companies expand investment in petrochemicals, automobiles, and shipbuilding in the Suez Canal Economic Zone.
Energy supply chains are becoming increasingly important due to uncertainty over existing crude oil routes. Growing demand for alternative routes is putting pressure on the SUMED pipeline, which connects the Red Sea coast with the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal.
