Korea's $54 Billion LNG Investment Sparks Optimism Amid Bilateral Tensions
The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) is optimistic about Korea's investment in the Alaska liquefied natural gas project, which was valued at $54 billion. AMCHAM Chairman James Kim stated that the announcement from US President Donald Trump was a 'positive sign of progress' in bilateral economic ties.
However, Kim emphasized the need for careful consideration of investment costs, energy prices, commercial viability, and participation terms. He noted that questions surrounding the timing and coordination of the announcement are matters for the two governments to address.
Kim also expressed optimism about the overall direction of bilateral economic ties, stating that AMCHAM will continue working with government and business leaders to turn commitments into 'practical opportunities and lasting benefits' for both economies.
Despite lingering friction over US concerns about Korea's digital regulations and the dispute surrounding Coupang, Kim stated that such issues would not undermine the foundation of bilateral trade ties. He noted that decades of investment, trade, and close business ties have built a strong relationship between the two countries.
