Ksi Lisims LNG inks massive supply deal with Uniper
Ksi Lisims LNG has signed a formal 20-year supply deal with German utility Uniper, according to reports. The massive project is expected to be Canada's second-largest LNG facility and could represent 13% of the country's total natural gas exports by the early-to-mid 2030s.
The $30-billion Ksi Lisims project, located on Pearse Island near the Alaska border, will export up to 12 million tonnes of LNG per year. Uniper has a significant presence in northwestern Europe, with 18.5 gigawatts of power generating capacity and a major role as an LNG importer.
However, not everyone is pleased with the deal. Richard Brooks, climate finance director at Stand.earth, called it 'a major step backwards for climate action' for both Germany and Canada. He argued that moving forward with a massive new methane gas project while wildfires rage across Canada and Europe is 'irresponsible and an abdication of leadership'.
David Thames, head of Western LNG, said the project would be one of the lowest emissions production complexes in the world due to responsible development. B.C. Premier David Eby noted that the Nisga'a Nation and its partners had 'work to do with other nations and with local communities' to bring people along.
