The United States is making a significant push into Southeast Asia's energy market, offering billions of dollars in investment and expertise to become the region's partner of choice. The move, which includes $1.5 billion in financing through the International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), aims to address concerns about future supply shocks due to ongoing turmoil from the Iran war.

The DFC announced its largest project investment ever, with the funding aimed at building energy infrastructure across the Indo-Pacific. This includes offering gas, grid technology, and nuclear expertise to Southeast Asian countries. The US is also committing $2.5 billion in investments across other areas, including energy security and future technologies.

The move serves both American strategic and commercial interests, analysts say. It opens up new markets for US liquefied natural gas and helps counter China's dominance in big-ticket infrastructure projects. However, the region also stands to benefit from this partnership, as it offers an opportunity for Southeast Asian countries to improve their energy security.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently visited Manila for the Asean foreign ministers' meeting, where he announced the US$1.5 billion in financing. Kevin Kim, US ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, said that the US wants to work with Asean as it develops its digital economy and continues to bolster its energy security.
