Ksi Lisims LNG Lands Major Deal with Uniper, Boosts Canadian-EU Energy Ties
Ksi Lisims LNG has secured a major long-term sale and purchase agreement with German energy company Uniper. Under this deal, Uniper will buy 2 million tonnes per year (Mtpa) of liquefied natural gas from the proposed floating facility north of Prince Rupert.
The project is a joint effort between the Nisga'a Nation and Western LNG, with backing from Houston-based Western LNG. The facility would be supplied by the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission pipeline, which is currently under construction but still awaiting a final investment decision.
With this agreement, Uniper becomes the fourth major energy company to sign on with Ksi Lisims LNG, bringing the total contracted capacity to 7 Mtpa out of a projected 12 Mtpa. The deal is seen as a significant step in strengthening the strategic energy partnership between Canada and Germany.
Nisga'a Nation President Eva Clayton said that this agreement reflects the 'Common Bowl' philosophy of sharing abundance with others, while Western LNG's Davis Thames emphasized the project's low emissions profile.
Government officials from both countries hailed the deal as a way to diversify trade partnerships and strengthen national resilience. However, the pipeline is facing legal challenges in the B.C. Supreme Court.
