Labour Pledges Pragmatic Approach to North Sea Drilling Amid Global Energy Crisis
Labour Party leader Andy Burnham has promised to take a 'pragmatic' approach to drilling in the North Sea, a move welcomed by industry figures who see it as an important step towards boosting the UK's energy security.
Burnham made the promise during his speech at the Labour conference, where he also acknowledged that oil and gas would continue to be part of the country's mix for decades.
The decision on two major North Sea projects, Jackdaw and Rosebank, is due soon. These fields, owned by a joint venture between Equinor and Shell, could produce nearly a billion barrels of oil and fulfill more than six per cent of the UK's gas demand.
Industry figures are optimistic that the government will approve these projects, which would be an 'important first step' towards securing energy supplies. The war in the Middle East has disrupted global energy markets, leading to rising prices and a shortage of supply.
