Lagarde Signals No Rush to Hike Rates Despite Energy Surge
European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has signaled that there's no rush to hike interest rates, despite surging energy prices pushing market expectations for additional rate hikes. In a press conference in Dublin on the 18th, Lagarde emphasized that policy interest rates do not move mechanically with oil and natural gas prices, contrary to growing market expectations.
The ECB has been gradually increasing rates to curb inflation, but renewed rises in energy prices pose upside risks to the inflation outlook while intensifying pressure on economic growth. Market analysts have priced in an additional three to four rate hikes over the coming year, with oil and gas prices near levels consistent with the ECB's 'adverse' scenario, which could push inflation toward 4% by year-end.
Lagarde stressed that interest rates do not move in tandem with energy prices, as other factors such as growth and consumption also exert influence. She noted that uncertainty is shaping the economic outlook, and the ECB will take a cautious approach to future monetary policy decisions after assessing a broad range of economic indicators.
