Lambton County councillors have given their backing to the Northern Shield pipeline project, which aims to bring 500,000 barrels of crude oil per day from Alberta to Sarnia's petrochemical industries for refining.

The federal and provincial governments have pledged support for the project, citing its importance in maintaining control of Canada's energy resources.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley requested the county's endorsement, stating that Enbridge's Line Five, which currently brings oil to Sarnia, remains under threat. He emphasized that this new pipeline is 'the Canadian solution' and urged councillors to send a message to the federal government.
