Lamu Residents Demand Guarantees Ahead of Dangote Refinery Project
Residents of Lamu are calling for guarantees on jobs, land rights, and environmental protection before the construction of the Dangote East African Refinery begins. The estimated cost of the project is Ksh2.2 trillion.
The refinery, which will have a capacity of up to 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day, will depend on either domestic production or imported crude. However, Kenya's current crude oil production is insufficient to meet this demand.
Residents are also concerned about the impact of the project on their livelihoods and the environment. They want local communities to be involved in decision-making and given access to information about the project's potential impact.
Mahir Ahmed, a resident, called for investment in local education to equip young people with skills needed to take up opportunities arising from the refinery.
