Larsen Seeks Review of Oil Spill Response Plans Amid Alberta-to-B.C. Pipeline Concerns
Washington State Congressman Rick Larsen has written to the top US Coast Guard official requesting information on the coordination of oil spill response plans for the proposed Alberta-to-B.C. pipeline.
The congressman claims that the pipeline will increase oil tanker traffic in the Salish Sea, thereby increasing the risk of catastrophic oil spills that could harm marine ecosystems and environments on both sides of the Canada-US border.
Larsen, who serves as the top Democrat on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, is seeking details about the joint contingency plan between the US and Canada for responding to potential oil spills.
He intends to share his findings with Canadian counterparts and explain why constituents in his state oppose the pipeline project.
