QatarEnergy Buys US LNG Cargoes Worth $1 Billion Amid Strait of Hormuz Disruptions
QatarEnergy has made significant purchases of US liquefied natural gas (LNG) to offset disruptions caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a major shipping route. The company declared force majeure on its LNG shipments after Iran closed the waterway, affecting 20% of global oil and gas supplies from major producers in the Gulf region.
In response, QatarEnergy bought 33 spot LNG cargoes from the US this year for delivery to key customers in South Korea, Taiwan, Bangladesh, India, and Japan. This is a significant increase from last year's four cargoes purchased by the company.
The value of these purchases amounts to around $1 billion, with most of them already delivered or en route to their destinations. The US has become the world's largest LNG exporter in recent years, and producers like Venture Global have benefited from the growing demand for alternative supplies.
