Late Rain Brings Hope, but Drought Damage Already Done for US Crops

Agricultural weather conditions in the United States are undergoing significant changes as rain showers move into key regions. However, this shift is largely coming too late to mitigate drought damage already suffered by corn and soybeans.

The southern Plains have experienced roughly two months of mostly hotter- and drier-than-normal weather, which has put a strain on rangeland, pastures, and summer crops. Oklahoma's situation stands out, with 64% of its rangeland and pastures rated very poor to poor as of September 13.

While rain is expected to reach the Corn Belt, it will not provide meaningful help to drought-affected crops in most areas. The USDA has cautioned that the rainfall is too late to reverse damage already done by heat stress.

The outlook indicates a wetter pattern across a broad portion of the central United States. Agricultural meteorologist Brad Rippey reports that Western showers are shifting eastward, leading to beneficial weekend rainfall across the Plains. This could lead to 1-2 inches of precipitation in some areas and up to 4 inches along a corridor from Iowa to Ohio.

The rain may have greater value for replenishing soil moisture and preparing fields for upcoming crop cycles than changing yield potential of mature summer crops.
