Libya Earns Windfall from Oil Exports Despite Production Shortfalls
Libya's Ministry of Economy and Trade reported that the country earned $15.234 billion from oil exports in the first half of 2026, exceeding its revenue target by approximately $1.25 billion or 8.9%.
The foreign-currency earnings represent a windfall for Libya, which holds Africa's largest proven crude reserves. The higher global oil prices have made Libyan light, low-sulphur crude more attractive to European refiners searching for alternative supplies.
However, the country's political divisions and uncontrolled government spending threaten to undermine the gains from this increased revenue. Additionally, renewed attacks on energy infrastructure pose a risk to Libya's ability to maintain its production levels.
