Lightning-Struck Ethanol Plant Fire Contained in Chatham
A fire broke out at Greenfield Global's ethanol plant in Chatham on Wednesday morning after lightning struck one of the corn-based ethanol storage tanks. The company says damage is limited to that area and won't affect distillation capabilities.
No injuries have been reported, but cleanup efforts are underway after a small amount of firefighting foam was observed beyond the facility's property line.
A team of environmental specialists and consultants has been brought in to assess the site and determine if any further remediation is needed. The company is working with local authorities and industry partners, including Borouge International and Shell, to contain the cleanup and decontaminate equipment and vehicles.
