Lloyd’s Register Approves GasEntec’s High-Capacity LNG FSRU Design
Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted GasEntec an Approval in Principle (AiP) for a groundbreaking floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) design, marking a significant milestone in LNG infrastructure development. The FSRU is designed to deliver up to one billion cubic feet of gas per day, positioning it among the highest-capacity units currently in development. The approval was awarded following an independent assessment of the design’s technical and safety fundamentals, presented during Gastech 2026 in Bangkok.
A standout feature of the design is its multi-mode regasification system, which allows operation in open, closed, and combined-loop modes. This flexibility enables operators to adapt to varying environmental conditions, regulatory requirements, and project needs, ensuring reliable gas delivery across diverse operating environments. The modular architecture of the design allows for customization to meet different capacities, pressures, and operational requirements.
GasEntec plans to use this AiP to advance the FSRU design towards execution, supporting projects for FSRU owners and developers. Jose Navarro, Global Gas Technology Director at Lloyd’s Register, highlighted the design’s ability to address key challenges in future FSRU projects, noting its high send-out capacity and operational flexibility. Sean Van der Post, Global Offshore Business Director at LR, emphasized the importance of early-stage assessments in providing confidence to developers, investors, and operators.
TG Kim, co-chief operating officer at GasEntec, underscored the design’s efficiency and adaptability, stating that it enables faster deployment and project-specific engineering. He also noted the growing global energy demand, driven by factors such as grid expansion and AI data center power needs, highlighting the importance of reliable gas delivery.
