LNG Boom Burdens Local Fishermen

Cameron, Louisiana, was once the largest exporter of seafood in the US. Now it's one of the largest exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG), a shift that has devastated the local fishing industry.

The construction of Venture Global's LNG plant in Cameron began in 2019 and is now fully operational. The company plans to export over 640 billion cubic feet of LNG per year, with two berths for conventional LNG carrier ships that can haul 185,000 cubic meters at a time.

For local fishermen like Brian DeBarge and Anthony 'Tad' Theriot, the arrival of LNG has meant financial ruin. They struggle to afford healthcare and groceries on credit, and insurance is no longer an option for many.
