LNG Canada Partners Greenlight Massive Expansion Amid Global Demand Surge
The Shell-led LNG Canada project is set to move forward with a massive expansion, doubling its capacity to up to 30 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year.
The partners in the project are expected to announce their decision on Tuesday, which would bring an estimated $33-billion in private investment to Canada.
The LNG Canada expansion was one of the first projects referred to the Major Projects Office for fast-track approval.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson will be attending an announcement about energy on Tuesday, which is expected to coincide with the partners' decision.
The project has been in the works since LNG Canada began exporting to Asia from its first phase in 2025, and the expansion would take advantage of surging global demand for natural gas.
