LNG Financing Window Narrows as Lenders Prioritize ESG Performance
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) financing is facing increasing scrutiny from lenders, who are becoming more selective in their project evaluations.
A recent survey of ten LNG financing institutions across commercial banks, export credit agencies, and multilateral lenders revealed that environmental and social (E&S) expectations are playing a significant role in determining project bankability.
The survey found that five out of the ten lenders expect to cease LNG financing activity at some point in the future, indicating a narrowing window for projects seeking traditional financing partners.
Lenders are increasingly looking for projects that demonstrate strong E&S performance, stakeholder engagement, and financing readiness. Social license to operate has become a critical concern, with community acceptance, stakeholder trust, Indigenous rights considerations, and broader social impacts emerging as key indicators of project bankability.
