LNG Imports Surge as Europe Enters Gas Storage Crisis
Europe's liquefied natural gas imports reached their highest level in four months this September, totaling 10.6 billion cubic meters, according to data from Gas Infrastructure Europe.
This represents a 15% increase from August and underscores the continent's continued reliance on global maritime shipments to offset structural deficits left by Russia's loss of pipeline supplies.
The seasonal uptick in imports reflects the urgent need to inject gas into underground caverns before temperatures drop, straining domestic heating demand and network pressure.
Liquefied natural gas now accounts for 42.2% of Europe's gas supplies, with North Sea gas second at 38.7%, and North African pipeline flows at 9.6%.
