LNG Industry's Redfish Boost Falls Short for Louisiana Fishermen

Fishermen in Louisiana's Southwest region are raising concerns about the liquified natural gas (LNG) industry's efforts to boost local fisheries. The industry has contributed to a recent restocking of redfish, but many believe this is a small gesture compared to the significant impact it could have on the ecosystem.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries released 150,000 young, hatchery-raised redfish fingerlings into coastal waters in September. The cost of this effort was covered by several companies, including Cameron LNG and Sempra Infrastructure. However, commercial fishermen are skeptical about the effectiveness of these efforts.

'They didn't have to, so we all appreciate it. But although it's appreciated, we need more of it,' said Justin Lyons, a fishing guide from Cameron Parish. Lyons emphasized that more investment in coastal restoration is necessary for young fish to survive and grow.
