LNG Vessel Unable to Berth as Chattogram Faces Gas Crisis
Chattogram faced another severe gas shortage on Tuesday night as an LNG vessel unable to berth due to rough sea conditions, disrupting household cooking and public transportation. The sudden drop in gas pressure left thousands of domestic consumers struggling to cook.
Sushmita Paul, a resident of Askar Dighir Par, said she had been unable to cook throughout the day yesterday. 'There was no gas since morning. It returned at 3:00pm and then disappeared after a few minutes,' she told The Daily Star last night.
According to officials of Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Ltd (KGDCL), Chattogram requires around 350 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of gas for normal operations. But supply fell to 180-190 mmcfd yesterday, leaving a deficit of nearly 50 percent.
