Louisiana Set to Add 55,000 Jobs Driven by Major Industrial Projects
Louisiana is poised for significant job growth over the next two years, with an expected addition of 55,000 jobs. This surge is driven by major industrial construction projects, including data centers, liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants, and SpaceX’s launch facility. The Louisiana Economic Forecast, presented by economist Loren Scott, projects a 2.7% increase in new jobs between 2027 and 2028.
Baton Rouge is anticipated to lead this growth, adding 16,500 jobs, making it the fastest-growing metro area in the state. The region is home to several major industrial contractors working on projects like the $12.5 billion Hut 8 data center near St. Francisville, the $5.8 billion Hyundai-POSCO steel plant in Ascension Parish, and the $3.7 billion CF Industries facility, also in Ascension.
While Baton Rouge and other regions like Lake Charles and Acadiana are expected to see robust growth, metro New Orleans is forecast to add only 6,200 jobs, a 1.3% growth rate. This slower growth is attributed to a decline in convention business post-COVID and the completion of Venture Global’s Plaquemines Parish LNG terminal. However, the $2.6 billion Louisiana International Terminal in St. Bernard Parish could help the Port of New Orleans regain lost container shipping business.
Other regions like Shreveport-Bossier City, Hammond, and Alexandria are also projected to see job increases, thanks to projects like Amazon data centers, health system hiring, and data centers like Applied Digital’s $3.6 billion facility. The forecast notes that the ongoing war with Iran and its impact on oil prices adds uncertainty to the economic outlook.
