M&A Activity and Falling Crude Oil Prices Lift Stocks
The major U.S. stock indexes showed mixed results today, with the S&P 500 Index (SPY) gaining +0.16%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA) falling -0.51%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index (QQQ) rising +0.37%. December E-mini S&P futures (ESZ26) and Nasdaq futures (NQZ26) both saw gains of +0.14% and +0.37%, respectively. The market received a boost from significant merger and acquisition (M&A) activity, including Schneider Electric’s $22.6 billion agreement to acquire PTC Inc. and C.H. Robinson Worldwide’s $5.8 billion deal to purchase RXO. Additionally, a -1% decline in WTI crude oil prices helped ease inflation expectations, improving market sentiment and supporting stock prices.
WTI crude oil prices (CLX26) dropped more than -1%, influenced by Saudi Aramco’s decision to lower the price of its Arab Light crude to Asian buyers by $5 a barrel below the regional benchmark for November delivery. This cut was wider than anticipated, contributing to the decline in crude prices. The drop in oil prices also came after Saudi Arabia reported increased crude supplies through its East-West pipeline, which reached 80% of capacity by Saturday. The market is currently pricing in a 19% chance of a +25 basis point Fed rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on October 27-28.
Overseas, stock markets showed gains, with the Euro Stoxx 50 up +0.07%, China’s Shanghai Composite closed for the Golden Week holidays, and Japan’s Nikkei-225 Stock Average reaching a three-month high, closing up +2.40%. In the bond market, the 10-year T-note yield rose +3.0 basis points to 5.300%, pressured by supply concerns ahead of a $119 billion auction of T-notes and T-bonds this week. European government bond yields also moved higher, with the 10-year German bund yield up +1.8 basis points to 3.480% and the 10-year UK gilt yield up +4.2 basis points to 5.408%.
Among individual stocks, the Magnificent Seven technology stocks and software stocks showed strength, with notable gains in Microsoft (MSFT), Tesla (TSLA), Nvidia (NVDA), and Meta Platforms (META), all up more than +1%. PTC Inc. (PTC) surged more than +34% after the announcement of its acquisition by Schneider Electric, while RXO Inc. (RXO) rose more than +24% following its purchase agreement with C.H. Robinson Worldwide. However, C.H. Robinson Worldwide (CHRW) fell more than -10%, and Nike (NKE) declined more than -2% after a downgrade of its long-term debt rating by S&P Global Ratings.
