Maharashtra Poultry Industry Struggles with Soaring Corn Prices and Drought
Poultry farmers in Maharashtra are facing severe challenges due to the ongoing drought in the state. The poor rainfall and heat have led to crop losses, causing corn prices to soar to nearly Rs 28 per kilogram.
Industry representatives warn that these skyrocketing costs could force farmers to scale back livestock numbers to avert operational losses. Shivaji Kshirsagar, a poultry farmer and recipient of the state government's Krushi Bhushan Award, noted that his farm has been affected by the drought.
'We are forced to procure corn at nearly Rs 28 per kg, whereas egg prices have risen by merely one or two rupees over the same period,' Kshirsagar said. He added that his farm's capacity of nearly one lakh hens may be reduced due to escalating costs.
Sanjay Nalgirkar, president of the Poultry Breeders and Farmers Association of Maharashtra, highlighted the plight of broiler chicken producers. 'Water availability has become a crucial issue for us,' he said. 'Heat and humidity are hampering chick growth, while the price of corn feed continues to rise daily.'
