Maine Winter Heating Costs Soar by Nearly 80%

Maine households are bracing for a sharp increase in heating oil costs this winter, with an average cost of $2,939 projected by the National Energy Assistance Directors Association (NEADA). This represents a 77% rise from last year's average cost of $1,664, tied for the sharpest increase in the Northeast alongside Vermont.

The projected increase is attributed to rising global oil prices, which have been disrupted by conflict in the Middle East. The price of Brent Crude oil has risen above $100 per barrel as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains limited.

As a result, wholesale heating-oil prices are increasing, leading to higher costs for consumers. In Maine, the average statewide price of heating oil hit a record high of $6.02 per gallon on September 21, according to the Maine Department of Energy Resources.

The NEADA has projected that more than four million U.S. households relying on heating oil will spend an additional 50% on heating this winter. Low-income families in the Northeast are expected to bear a significant burden, with an estimated $1.1 billion increase in heating costs.
