Malaysia Poised to Tap into Marine-Fuel Industry Opportunities

Malaysia has been urged to position itself as a regional marine-fuel hub by maritime expert Datuk Seri R. Jeyenderan, CEO of Maritime Network Sdn Bhd.

Jeyenderan, with over 30 years of experience in the maritime and shipping industry, pointed out that Malaysia's access to petroleum and palm oil resources, established storage facilities and ports, as well as its strategic position along major international shipping routes, make it an ideal location for developing the marine-fuel industry.

The expert noted that disruptions to oil supplies have increased demand for fuel in Asia, presenting an opportunity for Malaysia to expand its role in supplying petroleum and marine fuel to regional markets.

Jeyenderan identified the production and supply of Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) as a key area for development, suggesting that establishing Malaysia as a regional VLSFO blending and bunkering hub could generate opportunities across fuel storage, trading, shipping, transportation, and bunkering.

To support this growth, Jeyenderan emphasized the need for clear regulatory and operational guidelines to ensure proper recording and tracking of petroleum cargo when stored, transferred, or blended.
