Malaysia targets Africa and Middle East for palm oil market expansion
Malaysia is expanding its palm oil market reach beyond traditional buyers, targeting Africa and the Middle East for growth. The country exported over 9.1 million tonnes of palm oil in the first seven months of 2026, according to the Plantation and Commodities Ministry. Minister Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad emphasized the need to strengthen existing markets while exploring new opportunities to enhance industry resilience and reach new customers.
Noraini highlighted the importance of strong partnerships with governments, regulators, and industry players during her keynote address at the Malaysian Palm Oil Forum (MPOF) Kuala Lumpur 2026. She reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to being a reliable supplier in the global palm oil industry. The ministry also plans to support smallholders through better planting materials, training, and financial assistance to ensure they benefit from higher productivity and improved incomes.
The minister encouraged smallholders to collaborate for better access to services, more efficient farm management, and improved productivity. The Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification was noted as a key tool for helping smallholders meet market requirements. With around 450,000 smallholders managing 27% of Malaysia’s total oil palm planted area, their role in the industry is significant.
Palm oil remains a crucial part of Malaysia’s economy, with the country producing 10.8 million tonnes of crude palm oil in the first seven months of 2026. The focus on diversifying markets and supporting smallholders underscores the industry’s commitment to sustainable growth and global engagement.
