Malaysia's Economic Growth Falls Short for Many

Malaysia's economy grew at a rate of 6% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2026, making it one of the fastest-growing economies in the region.

The labour market is also healthy, with an unemployment rate of just 3%, close to a decade low.

However, despite these impressive numbers, Malaysians are not feeling the growth. Households are struggling to keep up with rising living costs, and businesses are being squeezed by higher input costs and weaker demand.

The discrepancy between economic reality and public perception is due in part to the fact that GDP measures only the value of goods and services produced, not how widely the income and benefits are shared.

Net exports surged 168.5% year-over-year to RM15.8 billion during the quarter, accounting for almost 40% of the 6% increase in GDP.

However, this growth was partly driven by a low base effect, as net exports had fallen to just RM5.9 billion in the corresponding quarter last year due to weak oil prices.

The concentration of economic growth in a few sectors means that investment opportunities on Bursa Malaysia are becoming narrower.
