Malaysia's Gas Malaysia Seeks LNG Terminal Decision in 2027 Amid Energy Security Concerns
Gas Malaysia plans to make a final investment decision on its first liquefied natural gas regasification terminal in the second half of 2027. The company aims to commission the facility by the end of 2030.
The terminal, valued at $490-735 million, will be built in Kedah state's Yan district and is a joint project with Tokyo Gas and VTTI. It will have a capacity of up to 6 million tonnes per year and become the first LNG import terminal in Peninsular Malaysia not operated by Petronas.
Gas Malaysia CEO Azli Mohamed stated that the new terminal is intended to fill a gap in gas distribution in northern Malaysia, strengthening energy security. He also mentioned that while imports will be the primary focus, there's potential for exporting pipeline gas to neighboring countries like Thailand.
