The Maldivian Cabinet has discussed measures to tackle the growing problem of copper wire theft in the country. The issue was raised at a meeting held last Sunday, with the President's Office citing the increasing number of thefts aimed at exporting copper wires for high prices.

Copper wire theft from electricity transformers, roadside and building cables, outdoor air conditioning units, and connected copper pipes has become increasingly common in Maldives. Several people have been arrested in connection with such thefts, including one who died last year after being electrocuted while attempting to steal copper from a transformer.
