Markets Plunge as Crude Oil Prices Surge Amid US-Iran Tensions
Markets plummeted in early trade on Wednesday, August 19, as crude oil prices surged due to ongoing tensions between the US and Iran. The temporary ceasefire expired without any diplomatic breakthrough, fueling concerns about a prolonged disruption to energy supplies.
Brent crude, the global benchmark, traded 0.67% higher at $91.63 per barrel, contributing to a broad risk-off mood across global financial markets. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, noted that the combination of rising oil prices and elevated bond yields has triggered this market sentiment.
The Sensex and Nifty indices fell sharply in early trade, with the 30-share BSE Sensex down 166.19 points to 77,070.93 and the 50-share NSE Nifty dropping 59 points to 24,096.75. From the Sensex pack, Tata Steel, Larsen & Toubro, Bajaj Finance, Bharat Electronics, Power Grid, and Mahindra & Mahindra were among the major laggards.
V.K. Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, attributed the market weakness to rising crude prices and appreciating bond yields globally. He noted that crude prices have been responding to news from the Middle East for months, creating uncertainty about the conflict's outcome.
