Marsa LNG Project Nears Completion at Sohar Port
The Marsa LNG project at Sohar Port is making progress towards establishing Oman as a regional hub for bunkering ships with liquefied natural gas (LNG). By June 30, 2026, construction of the project had reached over 55 per cent completion and was expected to start operations in Q1 2028. The Marsa LNG facility will have a capacity of one million tonnes per year and include an LNG storage tank with a capacity of 165,000 cubic metres, as well as dedicated bunkering facilities.
The project's CEO, Mahmoud bin Abdullah al Hashmi, stated that the project has achieved significant progress in construction, supporting OQ Exploration and Production's integrated growth strategy in the gas sector. The Marsa LNG facility aims to be the first onshore LNG bunkering centre in the Middle East and will serve maritime traffic in the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
The introduction of the LNG bunkering sector is expected to expand the range of services offered at Sohar Port, including storage, handling, transportation, maintenance, and logistics. The project also features a design based on electric operation, with the development of a 300 MW solar power plant to provide the equivalent of the plant's annual electricity needs.
