Massachusetts Governor Seeks Faster Review of Algonquin Gas Pipeline Expansion
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has asked the Trump administration to expedite the review of the Algonquin Gas Transmission pipeline's expansion, known as the Reliable Affordable Resilient Enhancement (RARE) project. The governor believes this move will help reduce soaring consumer energy bills in the state.
The RARE project aims to increase gas supply by 75 million cubic feet per day and provide gas to approximately 600,000 customers, lowering their gas bills by $40 million each year. This additional gas supply is expected to reduce reliance on higher-cost imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Constellation Energy's Everett LNG import terminal in Massachusetts.
Healey has emphasized the need for an 'all-of-the-above' approach to energy, which includes solar, wind, storage, nuclear, geothermal, hydro, and gas. The project is currently undergoing federal environmental review through the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
