Massachusetts Heating Oil Prices Soar 70% Amid Global Conflict

Massachusetts residents are facing a steep increase in heating oil prices, with costs reaching $5.98 per gallon - a nearly 70% jump from last year's prices.

The price surge is linked to high crude oil, gasoline, and diesel costs, particularly in the Northeast region where households rely heavily on heating oil. According to Mark Wolfe, executive director of the National Energy Assistance Directors Association (NEADA), 'It is a northeast problem.'

Wolfe attributes the rising prices to the U.S. war in Iran and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which have caused fluctuations in diesel fuel prices. The average price of diesel has reached $6.50 per gallon, according to AAA.

Despite projections of a warmer winter due to El Niño, residents in New England are expected to see their heating costs increase by an average of $548 this year compared to last year, according to NEADA's estimations.
