MCX Launches Crude Sunflower Oil Futures Contract for Indian Market
The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) has introduced a new futures contract for crude sunflower oil, aiming to strengthen price discovery and risk management in India's edible oil market.
This move comes as India relies heavily on imports to meet its edible oil requirements, with around 60% of its needs coming from abroad. The country consumes an estimated 26-27 million tonnes of edible oil annually, making it sensitive to global price movements and supply-demand dynamics.
Sunflower oil accounts for approximately 9% of India's edible oil consumption, with around 2.8 million tonnes being met through imports. MCX MD & CEO Praveena Rai said that the new contract will provide market participants with a transparent and efficient exchange-traded mechanism to manage price exposure.
