MDGIF Boosts Nigeria’s Gas Sector with N1.6 Trillion Investments
The Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) has significantly boosted Nigeria’s gas infrastructure sector, attracting approximately N1.6 trillion in investments. The fund, established under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, operates under the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and focuses on enhancing domestic gas supply and energy access.
MDGIF has approved around N671 billion for various projects, contributing to the overall investment growth. The fund oversees 31 projects involving 205 infrastructure assets, with 127 projects already commenced, 10 commissioned, and 9 stations in commercial operations. These projects include gas processing plants, pipelines, compressed natural gas (CNG) stations, liquefied natural gas facilities, and liquefied petroleum gas storage infrastructure.
To further its impact, MDGIF is developing a $500 million financing framework in collaboration with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority and InfraCredit. The fund uses minority catalytic equity investments to share risk and strengthen capital structures, fostering private and institutional finance. Funding sources include a 0.5 percent levy on wholesale gas and petroleum prices, gas flare penalties, and investment income.
Notable initiatives include the Equipment Leasing Joint Venture Project, aimed at establishing four mother stations and 75 integrated refueling units, and Topline’s indigenous mini-LNG plant. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasized that these initiatives enhance energy security, lower transportation costs, create job opportunities, and promote economic resilience. With 50 additional projects anticipated to reach pre-commissioning phases by the end of 2026, MDGIF is set to play a critical role in expanding Nigeria’s gas infrastructure.
