Mecca Alliance Gains Momentum as Saudi Arabia Prepares for First Major Test
The Mecca alliance between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan is gaining momentum as it prepares to face its first major test. The defense pact, signed in August, aims to provide mutual support in case of an armed attack on any of the three countries.
Within weeks of signing, the three governments began building out institutions and military mechanisms to give practical meaning to their commitment. They also started discussing intelligence sharing, military coordination, and integration of capabilities.
The pact is seen as a strategic move by Saudi Arabia to strengthen its capacity to deter threats to its territory and the Red Sea corridor while reducing its reliance on external security guarantees. The kingdom's economy relies heavily on the maritime corridors through which it exports oil and goods.
Turkey, with its sophisticated defense industry and diplomatic presence in the region, is seen as a key player in this alliance. It has contributed drones and other systems to the pact, making it an attractive partner for Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
