Meta Drops C$13 Billion on Alberta Data Center
Tech giant Meta is investing C$13 billion in its first Canadian data center, located in Sturgeon County, Alberta. The massive project represents a 1-gigawatt facility that will support the global AI boom.
The announcement comes as Meta doubles down on AI development, pledging hundreds of billions of dollars to build large data centers worldwide. This new facility marks the company's 33rd data center globally and highlights Alberta's attractive energy landscape, which offers a significant discount for natural gas compared to the US benchmark.
Alberta's cold climate makes cooling super-computers more cost-efficient, and its existing data centers already rely on the province's energy grid, powered by 60% natural gas. Meta has partnered with Pembina Pipeline, which will build a new natural gas-fired power-generation facility in Sturgeon County to meet the project's needs.
