Mexico Targets 75% US Natural Gas Import Reduction
Mexico is aiming to reduce its reliance on US natural gas imports by bolstering infrastructure and developing unconventional resources. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced this goal in her state of the union address, targeting a reduction of US natural gas imports.
The country currently relies heavily on imports from the US, with pipeline imports exceeding 8 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). To address this, Mexico plans to invest in new infrastructure, including the development of unconventional resources and the construction of 13 gas-fired plants.
The pipeline buildout is focused on the Yucatán Peninsula, where energy demand is increasing. This region is also home to significant oil reserves and other natural resources.
