Michigan Farm Cuts Production Amid Record Diesel Prices and Tariffs
A Michigan farm is feeling the pinch of rising diesel fuel prices and tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Canada.
Kelly Walker, a third-generation farmer at Walker Farm in Burton, Mich., said he's being forced to cut back production due to record-high diesel prices averaging $6.27 per gallon nationwide.
The high cost of diesel is affecting his bottom line, as much of the farm's equipment relies on it for operation.
'You're not going to work for a dollar an hour,' Walker said in reference to the increased costs associated with fuel and other inputs.
To stay afloat, Walker has closed down his greenhouses and reduced production of some crops, including flowers and vegetable plants.
He's also raised prices on sweet corn by 30 cents per ear to try and break even.
The rising costs are not only affecting Walker but also consumers who will eventually feel the impact when prices rise at grocery stores.
