The Michigan Supreme Court has ordered state regulators to reconsider a key permit for Enbridge's oil pipeline project under part of the Great Lakes.

The court's decision on August 1, 2026, comes as a major setback for the Canadian energy company's plans to build a tunnel that would carry its Line 5 pipeline beneath Lake Michigan.

The permit was granted by state regulators in 2019, but opponents had argued that it did not adequately address potential environmental risks associated with the project. Enbridge has stated that the pipeline is safe and necessary for energy supply.
