Middle East Conflict Pushes Oil Tanker Rates to Record Highs
Oil tanker rates have reached record highs due to attacks on shipping in the Middle East. The cost of shipping oil from the Gulf of Oman to China has increased significantly, with VLCCs loading oil at a Worldscale rate of around 450, equivalent to $11.50 per barrel. This is the highest rate since the start of the US-Israeli war with Iran.
The recent attacks by both sides have increased the risk of operating in the region, causing freight rates to rise even further. VLCCs on the West Africa to Asia route have also reached record highs due to the ongoing military escalation.
Analyst Ioannis Papadimitriou from Vortexa said that 'renewed attacks between the U.S. Navy and Iran continue to push freight rates around the Gulf to new highs.' The recent events are having a wider impact on the economy, with elevated shipping costs potentially adding to inflationary pressures.
