Middle East Tensions Fuel Oil Price Gains Amid Gas Supply Constraints
The global energy market is facing diverging risks as oil and European natural gas react differently to Middle East supply concerns. According to Commerzbank's Norman Liebke, Brent crude has been supported by rerouted flows, while gas prices remain constrained due to lost LNG from Qatar and US cargoes diverted to Asia.
The ongoing tensions in the Middle East continue to drive energy prices higher. The price of Brent crude rose by 6.5% this week, while European gas prices increased by nearly 9%. Although an agreement between Iran and Oman regarding transit rules through the Strait of Hormuz appears to be in sight, significant issues remain unresolved.
The markets will likely remain focused on developments in the Iran conflict, with a sustained reopening of the Strait of Hormuz expected to provide noticeable relief for oil prices. However, even then, the European gas market is expected to remain tight due to ongoing supply constraints.
