Middle East Tensions Push Indian Markets Down Amid $100 Brent Crude Fears
Indian equity markets began Wednesday with losses as escalating tensions in the Middle East pushed crude oil prices closer to $100 a barrel, weighing on investor sentiment.
The BSE Sensex dropped 474.44 points, or 0.63%, to 75,103.14, while the Nifty 50 fell by 140.60 points, or 0.59%, to 23,494.50 in early trade.
This decline marks a continuation of the downward trend over the past seven sessions, with both indices losing 2.2% during this period and falling in six out of seven days.
The prices of Brent crude futures jumped by 1.5% to $99.5 a barrel following the escalation of the Middle East conflict, which includes Iranian-backed Houthis launching strikes on several Saudi cities, US forces targeting multiple Iranian oil tankers, and Iran striking a US base in Jordan.
This increase in oil prices is concerning for India, as it imports most of its energy needs. Prolonged high oil prices could exacerbate the trade deficit, fuel inflation, and impact economic growth.
