Middle East Tensions Send Oil Prices Soaring
Oil prices surged on Wednesday as renewed tensions in the Middle East fueled concerns over global crude supplies. Brent crude climbed 4.41% to $87.80 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 4.23% to $82.61 a barrel.
The price rebound came after the market had retreated nearly 5% on Tuesday following hopes for renewed diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran. However, those expectations were tempered as regional security concerns worsened once again.
The Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route, remained in focus. Any prolonged disruption could raise energy costs further, increase transportation expenses, push fuel prices higher, and add inflationary pressure across major economies.
Saudi Arabia joined the US Central Command (CENTCOM) in carrying out air strikes on Iran-backed militant targets in Iraq after recent drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities. CENTCOM said the joint operation targeted multiple Iran-aligned militant logistics and weapons sites in eastern Iraq.
