Middle Eastern Allies Unite Against Escalating Regional Tensions

Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have formed a joint defence agreement to strengthen their collective deterrence against any act of aggression in the Middle East. The pact, signed in Mecca on August 7, includes a collective defence clause, which stipulates that an armed attack against any of the three countries would be regarded as an attack on all.

The agreement aims to promote peace, security, and stability in the region, particularly in the face of escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have been concerned by the increasingly aggressive military stances of both Israel and revolutionary Shi'ite Iran, which has been firing missiles onto Gulf oil exporters since February 28.

The pact builds on longstanding bilateral military ties among the three countries, with Turkey contributing its strong defence industry, Saudi Arabia providing technological spending, and Pakistan bringing a nuclear deterrent. However, experts note that the accord would likely not include a nuclear component, as Pakistan's atomic deterrent is focused on perceived threats from India.
