Mining Giants Cash In On AI Boom and Middle East Turmoil

Global mining giants Rio Tinto and Glencore are reaping huge profits from this year's high commodity prices and Middle East turmoil, according to their recent financial updates. Rio Tinto reported a 43% jump in profit over the first six months of the year, while Glencore's trading division made $2.9bn (£2.4bn) between January and July.

The companies' success can be attributed to several factors, including the artificial intelligence boom and electrification drive, which have led to a surge in demand for base metals like copper and precious metals like silver. Copper prices have risen by more than 66% since 2023, despite mining juggernauts racing to bolster supply.

Rio Tinto's boss Simon Trott hailed the company's 'step-change performance' so far this year, pointing to a 75% jump in free cash flow as signs that their productivity drive is bearing fruit. Glencore, on the other hand, has benefited from higher production volumes in zinc, nickel, and gold.

The companies' strong financial performance comes despite earlier plans for a $260bn megamerger between Rio Tinto and Glencore being abandoned in February.
