Minnesota Corn Yields on Track to Break Records as Soybeans Remain Uncertain

Minnesota's corn yields are on track to break records in 2026, thanks to late-July rains that boosted soil moisture and plant growth. According to DTN Lead Analyst Rhett Montgomery, corn production in Minnesota was a record in 2025, and the Yield Tour results suggest the potential for another record-breaking crop this fall.

Montgomery noted that despite periods of weather uncertainty in July, conditions improved drastically over the past few weeks and look favorable to mid-August. As of early August, 75% of Minnesota's corn crop was reported to be in good or excellent condition, 2 points higher than last year.

Farmers across the state are optimistic about their crops, with many reporting that they've had a relatively easy time planting and growing due to favorable weather conditions. However, soybean yields remain a wildcard, as August is a critical month for the crop's development. Timely rains will be necessary to maximize yield potential.

The University of Minnesota Extension's David Nicolai noted that excessive moisture during planting season was not an issue this year, allowing farmers to get their crops in early and evenly. However, hot temperatures in July caused some corn to start wrapping, especially in western counties where the soil doesn't hold water as well.
