MISC and QatarEnergy launch first advanced LNG vessel for sustainable maritime future
MISC Group, a key player in the maritime energy sector, has named its newest liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, Th'ailib, marking a significant step in its partnership with QatarEnergy. The ceremony, held at Samsung Heavy Industries' shipyard in South Korea on October 6, 2026, celebrated the launch of the first of three advanced LNG vessels designed to promote a more sustainable maritime industry.
The 174,000-cubic-meter vessel, equipped with cutting-edge emissions-reducing technology, will operate under a 15-year charter agreement with QatarEnergy. This long-term partnership supports both companies' goals of decarbonization and fleet modernization, reinforcing MISC's role in QatarEnergy's LNG fleet expansion program. Datuk Zahid Osman, President & Group CEO of MISC, emphasized the importance of LNG in meeting global energy demands while transitioning to lower-emission systems.
Th'ailib features dual-fuel engines, a reliquefaction system, and an air lubrication system to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. The vessel also includes advanced navigation and safety systems, ensuring reliable and efficient LNG transportation. This development follows MISC's successful participation in QatarEnergy's Phase One LNG fleet expansion, further solidifying its position as a leader in sustainable maritime solutions.
Osman highlighted the decades of experience and confidence that underpin MISC's ability to operate sophisticated maritime assets safely and efficiently. The naming of Th'ailib signifies a milestone in the company's disciplined growth agenda and its commitment to supporting QatarEnergy's long-term LNG transportation needs.
